Sean Milk

I've just seen "Valkyrie", "Revolutionary Road", and "Milk". Valkyrie was the least enjoyable of the three for me while Milk was the triumph. Featuring a virtuoso turn from my favourite actor Sean Penn as gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk, I think only Mickey Rourke's turn in the The Wrestler can take away a second Oscar win for Penn with this one. Penn not only inhabits Milk but transcends the role to raise the film to dimensions of grandeur and utter charm. Director Gus Van Sant should also be mentioned for making a fine return to mainstream filmmaking. Yes, I loved it.
Revolutionary Road tells the story of a marriage - Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet, reunited of course some eleven years after Titanic made box office gold. This marriage however is a doomed one and seeing it play out on the screen is intriguing to say the least. Director Sam Mendes makes a return to studying American suburbia after American Beauty some ten years ago. This film tells quite a depressing story, however, the performances of Winslet and Dicaprio are a feast of emotion here and on that level the film really rocks.
Valkyrie has Tom Cruise playing a German colonel in the army of Hitler's Third Reich and is leading a resistance to assassinate Hitler. If you know your history you know that this assassination attempt on Hitlers life did not succeed and well, this film just felt like it was going through the motions really. The Cruiser has had better days I think.
Ciao for now.

I agree that it is one of Gus Van Sant's best films and Sean Penn should (must) win the Lead Actor Oscar for his fine performance.
However, I feel Revolutionary Road was also very good and seems to be overlooked for Oscars this year.
I must see The Wrestler as everyone is raving about it.
Cheers!
