My Blueberry Nights

I thought Chinese director Wong Kar Wai's American debut My Blueberry Nights would be a good one to catch on DVD and I was pleased I got around to it. It reminded me of watching Paris, Texas by German Wim Wenders in that a small and intimate American story was shot by an outsider with stunning photography.
Musician Norah Jones stars in her acting debut, and her music along with Cat Power's floats throughout the film. Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall) also appears. Also gathering around Jones, are Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, David Stratharin and Natalie Portman who she meets while on the run from a cheating lover. One might say that this film is rather slight but I think it works as a cinematic love song or poem, but probably a song.
I'll give it 3 out of 5.
I've also seen The Spirit. This is a comic book adaptation shot on green screen just like Sin City (2005) which was co-directed and adapted by Frank Miller, who also directs here. The verdict is that The Spirit is nowhere as good as Sin City. Although featuring a string of current cinematic beauties like Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johannsen and striking visual action, the film is somewhat clunky as it tells the story of a vigilante cop - The Spirit - who's very motivated to take down the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and save the day.
I think I can only give this 2 out of 5.
'Till next time.
